Personal Branding is a hot-button topic. In a highly competitive world, it’s important to make sure that others know what you do and who you do it for. In fact, it’s just as vital that your own internal brand image is clear and that you stay on-brand.
An effective personal brand, aligning your skills and passions, can increase business and open the doors of opportunity. It can also be your compass and impart a laser-like focus to your work. This focus can be the difference between a life of accomplishment and one of endless wandering. Your brand building is as much for you as it is your customers.
Branding yourself requires a consistency in your messaging, your communication of those messages, and in your design. This consistency works well with your target audience, but it also serves to embed your own brand within you.
I’ve found that whenever I encounter my own brand message, I’m reminded of my focus. My compass is set anew and I’m protected from distraction. I’m set to produce new posts, consistent with my purpose, and I continue to build my personal brand.

I’ve included screen shots to illustrate what I mean by design consistency. I’ve taken pains to use the same colors and similar graphics across my touch-points. If they were larger, you would see that the messages are the same, as well. Such an approach will help to enhance your credibility and establish your authority. It will help to build brand awareness with your customers. As a writer, working with each of these on a daily basis keeps me focused and secures my personal brand within me.
Update: My sites have changed, since this was written. But, the point is still the same – consistency in colors and in branding elements.

This is a fantastic way of looking at personal branding. In fact, lately I’ve been thinking it is MORE for us than our customers. I find that I need the constanst reminder of who I am and what I do, which by the way is not an easy thing to articulate with laser-like accuracy. The whole process really takes work.

Hi Adam,
A big thanks for the comment.
I really need to be kept on-brand. I tend to stray too much and then you cannot tell what I’m about.
Thanks, again.

Thanks Bob for reinforcing how crucial it is for a business to be consistent with their branding.
I’m always surprised that people don’t follow through, your brand is you and your business and it needs to be recognisable in an instant.
Social media should be fully branded too and this is where I’m seeing a lot of businesses letting down their branding – if you have a Facebook Fan Page/Twitter profile you must ensure it has the same look and feel i.e. branding as your main website.

Thanks for stopping by, Lilach.
A consistent look, messaging, and tone shown everywhere your prospects may find you puts you head and shoulders above your peers. You look like an authority, and if your content is good, that notion will be reinforced.
I really like your social media blog, too.

Hello Bob,
My first time here to your blog, I like your design style! Thanks for sharing those screen shots showing an example of consistency in personal branding. I think we can all learn some tips here!
I agree that personal branding is vital to standing out from the competition and for showing customers that you are a real person with passions and goals. This is especially important in my industry – network marketing.

Nice to see you, Rachael.
Glad to see you like my style. Style is so subjective, but the key is to be consistent across your many sites.
The “real person” thing is a big deal. With so many choices, people only pick you after you’ve broken the ice and presented yourself as likable and capable.
Again, thanks for stopping by.

Hi Bob,
There’s two important things in branding for me. First, I have to consistently show that I’m competent at what I’m doing. Second, my integrity must show through in my posts. Integrity is important even if you don’t have a business, with internet marketing, it is essential.
BTW, Comment luv is working on your site on my computer

Thanks Lou for the feedback.
Competence is important, and I try to show that with the work I do here at UBMighty. Integrity is a little harder to communicate. I think it takes time and interaction. But your readers will see it in your posts.
I guess some things can be shown quickly, such as an unwillingness to sell something you don’t believe in.
Oh, thanks. It’s good to know how your site works on a reader’s PCs. I can’t see it myself, of course.

Hi Bob,
First time being here too. Nice design!
I love your emphasis on branding. It’s so important. There is so much competition in the marketplace and when we concentrate on building our brand and staying consistent with it, we would reap the rewards for a long time to come.
Thanks for sharing this

I read somewhere, and I’m really not sure where, that it’s better to be the best at one thing than to be good at 20. This fits right in with personal branding.
Make your work about one thing and you’ll be known for it.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see more of you.

Hi Bob,
Great article, this isn’t a topic discussed much.
I was just reading something about how important
this is in building a brand.
It is called natural eye anchors, which sets off the
reticular activating system and subconsciously people
remember us when there is consistency in how
we present ourselves.
And of course, consistency is vital for trust
thanks again, great stuff

Good to see you.

Your branding is definitely consistent and strong! (The screenshot was a nice touch!)
It’s much harder for a smaller entity vs. a larger corporation to build a widely recognizable brand since we rely primarily on online media (vs. television, magazine, etc.) and are working with a much smaller budget.
This makes it doubly important to keep your branding consistent!
Thanks Bob!

Hi Bob,
It was a great idea to post the screenshots of your branding. I’m starting to read information on Branding lately and have never focused on it much.
You post certainly helps in reminding me to be consistent.
Since we are marketing with our blogs, articles and comments every day, we may as well show our brand and help other people remember us.

Hi Alan,
The consistency in look and messaging has long been used by big business as part of their “Integrated Marketing” techniques. But now it is also seen as a key element of personal branding.
I am trying to use the same approach and encourage others to adopt it as well.
Glad you liked my screen shots.
Thanks

I love this post! Also most people and businesses do not remember to keep that consistency in their branding through social media platforms and in whatever it is they are doing in reality.
I wish people would remember that branding should be the same throughout. I’ve tried to tell some friends about this in regarded to their personal branding and it falls upon deaf ears.
